Angry Cable Modem w/ PCMCIA

I am running SuSE 7.3 on a Toshiba Satelite. I am having trouble getting my cable connection to work. I know it's possible because it worked before I reinstalled th os. I've searched all the threads and can't find anything that helps. My service provider is AT&T.

I don't have a static IP adress, the company says everything is done by DHCP. The computer recognizes my card on startup (I get the two beeps).

When I try and run mozilla, i get the message: Cannot find "www.suse.de" please check and try again.
In the /var/log/message file these two lines appear:

+starting service dhcpclient on eth0...failed
eth0:no Ipv6 routers present

I am running through a netgear router.

I'm a newbie and I don't know too much programming stuff so if somebody could walk me through this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a network card that is not working

first use this..

ifconfig -a

after it boots to see if it shows the network card.

if it's there then try running this with it connected....

dhcpcd -h yourhostname

also you may put the hostname in this file...

/etc/sysconfig/network

like this...

DHCP_HOSTNAME=yourhostname

then in this file...

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

you need this

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=no

then after it boots up and it's plugged in run this...

dhcpcd

if you want it to connect on boot change ONBOOT=no to yes

but that does not make much since with a laptop since it may not be connected on boot.

Thank you for the help.
The system knows the card is there. However there is no "sysconfig" (or anything like it) under the etc directory. I ran a search for ifcg-eth0 and the computer could not find it. Is there any other place that this file can be found?

Thanks again

Ok

There has to be something for it, but I do not have SUSE

maybe you have the obsoleted rc.config in /etc/

someone who knows SUSE will be more help here

Have you tried SuSEconfig?
