cable modem broadband

I've just had cable broadband piped into my house. The company (Telewest in the UK - Blueyonder) only support Windows so I used my XP laptop for the install. I'm starting to worry about setting up SuSE 7.3 for my broadband. Neither of my network cards seem to work at the moment - though Blueyonder have my card ID. I looked at the netowrk stuff in YaST2 and followed all instructions but - nothing. Is there a step by step description of the procedure I need? What do I need to turn on?

Thanks

Try Yast2

I'm not real clear on your setup. I use SuSE 7.3 with a router and a static ip for my 3 PCs, so mine is a little different, perhaps. With just one PC you can probably use DHCP to pick up an ip address from your cable isp.

Assuming that you have a network card which is installed ok under SuSE: start YAST2 Control Center, then pick Network/Basic. From there, click on Network card configuration, then in the box click on the network adapter that you want to use to connect to the cable modem. Then click Edit, then in the screen that comes up pick the bullet for "Automatic address setup (via DHCP)". Click next then finish.

That should get you an ip, again assuming that you connect directly and not through a router. I'm guessing that this will also get you pointed to your isp's dns server. If this gets you to where you can ping by ip but not by name then you may also have to add dns servers manually.

I need to use DHCP but when I come to save the config I find that no IP addresses have been assigned. I've suddenly got loads of invalid lines (noticed at boot) in /etc/modules.conf

The card seems to be recognised by YaST2. My XP laptop works fine with broadband.

What could it be?

I am connected - but I had to put in an IP / subenet and Gateway - copied from the XP laptop. Do these change or can I just leave it now?

Oh Oh Something has gone wrong!!
On reboot, there were a lot (!) of /etc/module.conf errors. On investigation, there seems to be two files 1) /etc/modules.conf 2) modules.conf- (with the hyphen). My TV card is no longer working. The sound card has stopped. eth0 is off. Boot is taking a long time.
Cable was working for a short, short time so I know it is going to work and I haven't lost faith BUT please help. I don't even know what questions to ask. My "windoze" reaction is to reinstall. Please restrain me.

Thanks

router or direct connect?

Are you using a router then or just connecting the laptop or the Linux machine directly to the cable modem?

Don't have a clue about the other errors...sounds like something else is going on. Any other changes since you last rebooted?

I'm short on time...will try to check in late night tonight (US Central time). Meanwhile maybe someone else will have an idea.

I'm connecting directly to the cable modem via eth0. I haven't made any other changes to my box - but all modules seem to have gone (is this term correct? I mean sound/ TV / and so on)....
Boot is wierd - line after line of errors. If I remove \etc\modules.conf will it be recreated after reboot when I set up sound, TV etc again?
Help!
Thanks!!
Scream!

the fact that all was well when I manually put in IP and Gateway (well - until I rebooted) and the fact that YaST2 wouldn't help with DHCP suggested that DHCP wasn't installed - so, one quick install later - I'm surfing!! Yippee!!

I deleted \etc\modules.conf (heart in mouth when I did - I had no idea what I was doing but i had to silence my screams!!) and reboot was as smooth as could be.

\modules.conf has recreated itself and now I've just got to set up my hardware. I assume I am correct in my assumption that \modules.conf and the sound card (for example) are very related? I hope so because I've been convincing myself all afternoon.

Thanks lnxcnvrt - sometimes you just have to know that someone else knows it can be done!!
