Cable modem and router - connection lost
 
Hello,

I have cable internet, a Linksys BEFSR41 router and two pc's (one Red Hat 9 and one Win2k). From time to time (plus minus 2 times a week) the internet connection goes down. I have to reboot the cable modem, the router and the pc's to get it up again. I noticed that when it goes down in the evening and I just shut down the pc and retry the morning after, it works fine too...

Can anyone tell me what to do? Change a setting on the router, on the pc's? Upgrade the firmware of the router?

Might be off topic a little but..you could call the cable company and ask then wtf you keep getting disconnected. Maybe you could get a couple months free out of it..

I agree.

It seems unlikely that anything having to do with your router or PCs would cause anything like that.
I had a similar problem with my connection a few months back. Fortunately my bro-in-law lives a block away and he had similar problems at the same time, so we both knew it wasn't our problem. So we complained to the technicians (repeatedly) before they started checking the lines that feed our neighborhood.

Maybe they were upset when I conveniently forgot to mention which OS I run before they came to my house. :D

You might check www.whatismyip.com if you have a dynamic IP from the ISP, then sign up for one of those services that keep track of your connection. I forget what they are called. Also, with that router, when you go into the html setup utility, you can see the IP address assigned to your system by your ISP. Once you have the IP information you can then use a ping service that pings your connection and your gateway every so often to determine if it is live. Then you have proof if it goes down. Of course your router and ISP may not respond to ping. There are other methods to do this too but I am not familiar enough with them.

I am having the same problem but in my case i know its the router. Belkin is a piece of crap, and i would not recomend their router to anyone. I have to go downstairs and unplug the router and plug it back in. I am going back to linksys as soon as i save some money.
And i forgot to add:
After i started using belkin's router, my ip changes every week so i have to make changes on the server every freaking weekend.

Belkin router SUX!

I don't think the problem is with the cable company, the problems started since I set up the router...

Anyone else having problems with this Linksys model?

The cable I used to connect the cable modem with the router was a cat 5e cable. Now I've put a cat 5 between the two devices, and the problem seems to be solved. Is that a logical explanation? Or was the cat 5e cable just damaged?

The cat 5e cable was probably damaged. Cat 5e cable is better that cat 5 cable. I have the same exact router you have and run the cat 5e and haven't had any problems at all.

This morning the problem returned, even with the cat 5 cable (which seemed to be the solution yesterday).

I'm getting desperate...

Could it be a problem with the router? Settings? Cable modem?

Koswo,
You need to start eliminating items from your suspected list of problems. Do you know someone with the same cable modem? Or can you get a new one from your ISP? Does the cable modem have any upgrades? Can you pack up the 'puter and take it to friend's and see if you continue to drop your connection? Have you tried talking to the ISP tech support? Did you set up the Linksys router with the Windows box or the Linux Box? My Linksys router says it is compatible with Mac$ and Win$ machines but doesn't mention the Linux OS. I would bet the problem is with Either the cable modem, the router or the ISP. You could try disconnecting the router for a day, but you will leave your WIN$ system wide open.

Hey man,
try disconnecting your router for a day or two and you'll at least find out if the problem is with the router or your isp and you can go from there

I connected one pc directly to the cable modem and now everything seems to be working fine. So I suppose the router is damaged? Or is it possible that my ISP sees the router and disturbs it?

if isps did that to everybody that has routers, they'd have to hire half the city lol. try borrowing another router from a friend see if that solves the problem.
