building DNS server

hi!
my boss want me do build an internal or intranet in our office like mail server web server without
external connection thru the internet(inter-office use only). my question is it possible to build a DNS server without internet conection and it is possible to build a DNS server without registering to the interic ex. "mydomain.com" can my user find my domainname if they email other department like accounting@mydomain.com? bottom line... can DNS server work interoffice only?

Sure you can. Bind will do that for you, although Ithink there may be some lighter servers available as well. Bind is standard though.

Have a look at http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/bind/

and read up on authoritative servers

You might also look at "djbdns" as well.

You may find a howto at www.tldp.org. Also, the O'Reilly book "Linux Cookbook" by Carla Schroder, which has a chapter on DNS which covers configuring both bind and djbdns.
