I am interested in building a domain name server. I have a junk PC with SuSE 9.0, so I'm ready to installing and configuring. I want to make this into a caching name server, and although I've read a HOWTO, it didn't work. I configured my named.conf and wrote a zone file. but when I dug my domain I couldn't find it. Has someone done this, or know how to do it?
I restarted named and did an rndc reload and I still get no response when I dig enviro-hosting.com. What did I do wrong? I'm a little new to DNS as you can probably tell .
are you using this as an internal DDNS server or external? because the how is for an internal DDNS server and from the host name you've just show me i'm guessing external, what i've shown you wont help
Ok, this is getting a little beyond what I can understand. Let me explain my situation in it's entirity: I'm starting a website building company-ish something or other that recycles old desktop computers into snazy servers for organizations, teachers, computer camps and the like. Anyway, I have apache2 running my site at http://24.225.65.94 (Check it out! By no means finished.), and I want to get my computer to act as a domain name server, so I don't have to pay DynDns an arm, a leg, and a kidnee to get a domain. I'm looking for www.enviro-hosting.com. After reading a number of howto's it appears that I have to have a netbios server, something I'm completely neglagent about. I can tell you all about IP packets etc, but Netbios is something I barely understand. All I know is that it's an IBM protocol that designates some low-level form of DNS-ish workgroup. Now, this I don't have, seeing how my network consists of a linksys wrt54g wireless router running sveasoft satori some-version, and the server is suse 9.0 barely running fvwm2 at 350MHz. Does this explain my situation? I really need to learn more about DNS.
well i'm sorry but this how-to it's for you, i've never setup an external DNS server and thats what you want, this is an internal DDNS server. you might want to go and post again, this time make your subject, 'external Dyn DNS server how-to' then, link to this forum and explain in deepth what you are trying to do.
