Unhappy Browser Freezes System

I have no prior experience with Linux, but needing to set up a LAMP system to run some testing on a php-based accounting system, I hauled out an old P2-333, wiped the hard drive and installed Mandriva 10.1. Everything went well until I started Konqueror - it connected and displayed the Mandriva website just fine, but almost as soon as I connected to Google, the entire system locked up. I rebooted and this time the system froze while Konqueror was starting up! - I thought this kind of thing only happened with Windows!

Figuring there might be a conflict between Mandriva and my hardware, I started over, this time installing Mepis 3.3 only to run into the very same problem using the Mozilla browser.

Just to be certain that the first two tries weren't a coincidence, I once again started over, this time with Xandros 3.0 OCE and sure enough I have the same issue this time using Firefox.

The Linux box is connected (by cable) to a D-Link DI-614+ router which is used by three winXP machines as a wireless access point. It would seem that the networking configuration must be reasonably good or it wouldn't connect to the internet at all, but obviously something isn't quite right and I have no idea where to start looking!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - if you need any additional information about hardware or system configuration please let me know.

Thanks, Chris.

- are you low on memory ?
- did you configure a swap partiotion ?
- any "last words" in /var/log/messages ?

There is 256MB physical memory on board and the control panel appears to indicate that there is still free memory available at the time the lock-up occurs.

With each install, I used whatever the defaults were for partitioning the hard drive. With Xandros it called it something like "use entire disk". Checking the control panel shows reference to a swap partition but under Mount Point it shows "none" so I suspect there may not be one.

/var/log/messages shows only messages dated Feb 2 referring to build-v3-master. I tried monitoring this file by using tail -f but nothing is displayed before the system freezes.

I double checked the swap partition situation and there definitely is a swap partition of 376MB.

uninstall the flash plugin heard that is causing problem (but google doesnt have flash)

old nic card thats failing wrong driver installed for it

bad cable

just a guess sounds like they all use the same kernel and it doesnt like your nic card

try and ping google.com and other sites

ping your own box as well

goto http://localhost

what DNS servers are you using try your isp's not the routers

type the command as root

ifconfig

post back

sounds like an issue with the network card/driver...

disable your network card/driver and then use the box for a while and see if it doesn't freeze...

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'm making progress but desperately need further input!!

First let me answer the easy questions...
1. The same behavior was seen with Konqueror, Mozilla and Firefox so I concluded it wasn't a browser problem as such (maybe these are similar enough that my conclusion may not be correct?)
2. I had the machine running for 2 or 3 days without any problems before connecting it to the network. The NIC was installed, just not being used.

When I try to ping any remote location I get a "Network is unreachable" message and ifconfig reports:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:95:78:00:21
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes: 0 (0 b) TX bytes:0 (0 Kb)
Interrupt:10 Base address:0xdc00

which presumably confirms that eth0 is not activated.

I then tried ifup eth0 which resulted in:

cp: cannot stat `/var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid': No such file or directory
Listening on LPF/eth0/00:40:95:78:00:21
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:40:95:78:00:21
Sending on Socket/fallback
DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 267
DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1
bound to 192.168.0.101 -- renewal in 256011 seconds
cp: cannot stat `/var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid': No such file or directory
Failed to bring up eth0.

So.... where do I go from here? Once again, thanks for your help with this!

Chris.

does Xandros have a gui for configuring hardware if so use that and configure the nic manually use a static local ip that the windows systems are not using

example
IP:192.168.0.5 (static local ip)
Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.0.1 (routers ip)

as you have tried so many distro's trying suse wont hurt which has yast (yast is a gui for adding hardware/software and configuring it) make everything a lot easyer. If you can take out a nic card from a windows box (cant if they are laptops) and try that

Yes, Xandros has a network config GUI as part of its Control Center, so I configured eth0 with a static IP as suggested and so far, so good!

Hopefully that takes care of this issue, but if not I know where to find the help I need!

Thanks guys!

Spoke too soon!

When I set up the static IP and click the apply button, I get an error message: "No DNS IP addresses were given."

I just ignored this the first time around, but it now seems that as a result of that error, the setup reverts to DHCP. I was able to browse to www.apachefriends.org and got about 50% through downloading XAMPP before it froze up on me. Having rebooted, I am now back to having it freeze as soon as the browser is opened, so I guess I need to address that error message!

So.... what's my next step, please?

The only other NICs I have available are USB wireless units, but if you think I would be better off doing some testing with one of those I can certainly do so.

Thanks again,

Chris.

OK, I entered the IP of my router on the DNS tab and was then able to save the settings. Unfortunately the end result is the same - system froze before being able to initiate the download this time.

log into the router and look for your isp dns servers and use those

you can try a USB wireless unit but wireless in liux is worse to get going then cabled

OK, as suggested I entered my ISP's DNS servers on the DNS tab in Xandros, unfortunately no change as the system once again froze part way through the download.

Yes, I had thought that wireless would introduce another level of potential problems, which is why I have been persisting with my attempts to get things working with this NIC.

Any new ideas?

Chris.
