Broadcom 440x driver problem with red hat 9

I just installed Red hat 9, and i'm fairly new to linux. i went online with another computer and got the broadcom driver: BCM4401 for linux(i386). my kernel version is 2.4.20-8, and the readme said that it works for this version of the kernel. I got all the files extracted and what not, but when i put in the make command this is what i get:

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -DDBG=0 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -06 -I/usr/src/linux/include -c -o b44um.o b44um.c
make: gcc: Command not found
make: *** [b44um.o] Error 127

I have no idea what that means. I don't know if the make file is bad or what. I also tried a different driver which was posted on this forum, which also didn't work. I have also read things about if i upgrade my kernel version it would work, but i don't know. I'll have to look into how to upgrade my kernel, and its kinda hard since i don't have my internet working on my linux computer. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Congratulations on the conversionto Linux - commiserations on picking RH9.
RH9 is *old* - think Win98 or Windows ME (and you wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy).

Redhat evolved into Fedora - they are now up to Fedora Core 4 (FC4), so RH9 is ancient history.
I'd suggest you junk it now, and get something more current.
RH9 ... my, oh my ...

Anyway, looks like you've done all the right things - I presume you pulled the Linux package from the Broadcom site.
It has a src RPM which you'll need, and will certainly work on your kernel - I've used the same code on a (non-RH/Fedora) 2.6.10 kernel.
Your problem is nothing (at all) that you've done - it's the shitty distribution you (unluckily) chose.

If you insist on staying with RH9, try the following (you'll need your CDs);
- click the "redHat" (bottom left)
- then "System Settings"
- then Add/Remove Applications
- then Package Management
- scroll down and select Development Tools
- then OK/Install/... whatever the hell

sorry, I gave up at that point. This is such a crock of shit ...
Get a decent distro and try again.
