hey guys, i was wondering if there was a linux distro that on boot loaded a basic router with DHCP and various other services, and had conf files on floppy, i was wondering this because my friend has a computer with a crashed harddrive and doesnt want to or have money to buy a new harddrive for it, but needs a router cause his old one died

any help is appreciated

even just one that does proxying on boot will work

check google.com for floppyfw .. it's a floppy bootable distro (no hdd required) that will make a comp. w/2 nics into an OK router.. (no security tho)..
if you can get a HDD to boot in it, then ask me, and i'll get you a copy ov an IPTABLES script that win32sux wrote that locks everything down, but allows http and ftp from inside to the outside..

win32sux rocks.. he's my hero.

i may be mistaken... i just pulled up the disk and it does seem to be somewhat secure...

you can tweak the file to allow/disallow/change IP settings etc.

check the documentation for exactly how to do this...
i switched over to a small slackware install with IPTABLES.. due to the need ov doing other things with the box...

but floppyfw is cool.. very light.

I know he doesn't want to buy a hard drive, but if you can get hold of a old hard drive, even like a 1 gb or so, you could try Smoothwall or Ipcop. These will boot from the cdrom and install on the hard drive for you, very easy to follow and have DHCP and port forwarding and all the other services you would likely need.
