That's weird considering your nsswitch.conf lists files as the first entry on the hosts line. Permissions on key files?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 620 Sep 24 01:55 resolv.conf
I don't know enough about name resolution to know how to investigate what is happening under the covers ...
Presumably these commands also fail
