blocking ips

I am setting up iptables on my linux server which sits behind a linksys router the server has samba vsftp and dhcp running the problem is i have a large group of hackers trying to gain entry through ftp with alphabetic attacks is there a way that i can setup my vsftp config or my iptables config to drop requests if someone fails to authenticate after so many times

2 things I might try:

http://www.fail2ban.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.n...tml#LIMITMATCH

Good Luck

Did you enable fail2ban in the jail.conf for your FTP server? I also turned my maxretry to 3. I have also installed denyhosts and turned on the sync function. It downloads IPs of known attackers and places the IPs in the denyhost file, that stopped most of the attacks for me.
