BIND 9 won't reslove host names

I am trying to setup a DNS server that is hosted on the same machine as the the website (bad idea i know but just humor me) so i'm pretty sure that i have everything configured right but after i start the name server and try to ping the DNS server from another machine i just get hostname not found. even if i alter my client dns settings and point it to my newly configured DNS it still won't work. Here are my config files:

/etc/named.conf:

options {
recursion no;
allow-query { any; };
allow-transfer { any; };
directory "/var/named/";
forwarders {
209.63.146.65;
209.187.125.10;
};
};

logging {
channel default_syslog {
syslog local2;
severity info;
};

category lame-servers { null; }; // don't log these
category queries { default_syslog; };
category config { default_syslog; };
category security { default_syslog; };
};

view "external-in" {
match-clients { any; };
// we don't want to perform recursive lookups for external clients
//allow-recursion {no;};

zone "." {
type hint;
file "root.hints";
};

zone "coldcrow.com" IN {
type master;
file "coldcrow.com";
allow-update { none; };
};
};

/var/named/coldcrow.com

;
; Zone file for coldcrow.com
;
; The full zone file
;
$TTL 3D
@ IN SOA shadowfax.coldcrow.com. root.coldcrow.com. (
2004021811 ; serial, todays date + todays serial #
8H ; refresh, seconds
2H ; retry, seconds
4W ; expire, seconds
1D ) ; minimum, seconds

; Inet Address of name server
IN NS ns1.coldcrow.com.
IN NS ns2.coldcrow.com.

; Primary Mail Exchanger
IN MX 10 shadowfax.coldcrow.com.
;
IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
shadowfax IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
ns1 IN CNAME shadowfax
ns2 IN CNAME shadowfax
mail IN CNAME shadowfax
ftp IN CNAME shadowfax
www IN CNAME shadowfax
smtp IN CNAME shadowfax
timeclock IN CNAME shadowfax

Any ideas would be helpful

I've not setup a DNS yet, but I am also planning to do so. On the SAME box as Apache. I know, just dreadful! But a simple question, do you still need a /etc/resolv.conf file even though you are now a DNS server and what is the print out of this file?

It is not that dreadful when you're cash strapped. I do the same.

Yes. A client needs its /etc/resolv.conf configured inorder to find its name server. When you run nslookup www.didily.com , it uses resolv.conf to see what dns server it needs to obtain info from.

search coldcrow.com demon.co.uk .... (optional)
nameserver x.x.x.x.x
nameserver y.y.y.y

This is what I thought linuxxed. In fact Every service which needs internet access will need to resolv such names and thus will reference the resolv.conf for guidance. If jglazner has not placed any entries here then he will have these issues.

jglazner, you should place your gateway (router) addr within your resolv.conf file. Failing this, then list the DNS servers in this file.
