Seems to be quite a bit of love for vsftp lately, I might have to give it a go. Prior to "recently" I would have said, hands down:
www.proftpd.org

Cool

I think vsftp is getting all the press, because it ships with some distros - including RH9 (if I'm not mistaken). In my experience, proFTP is the best. I have recently switched from wuFTP and I'm very happy with it indeed.

Then what is the best ftp client?
I mean it can deal with flow control, and more efficient and secure.
Thanks!

And I think there are many other choice:
pure-ftpd vsftp proftpd.
Then anybody have done a benchmark on their performance, and could give any personal advice?
Thanks!

the best server is definetly glftpd!
www.glftpd.com

as client i think gftp http://gftp.seul.org/ is a good free choice .. if you are able to spend some money, Igloo FTP http://www.iglooftp.com/unix is very nice... but it costs 29,99 $

This thread is hilarious. Everyone says "ftpserver x is the best" and gives no reason why. I'm using proftp because it is the default for slackware. I would try another server if someone would give me a good reason to.

If you want little trouble, go with the one included in the distro. But DO update it, if it's old!

What FTP client is the best? Well, I would say "ftp". FTP is not secure, FTP is fast depending on your network. The client doesn't say anything about fast or secure. If you want secure, opt for something secure like scp or sftp. If you want something fast, try a client like "Downloader for X" which opens up several FTP connections (at least I think it does...).

What FTP server is the best? Well, proftpd has the most configuration options (not looking at the more obscure ftp daemons), but you really need to configure it to make it do exactly what you want. vsftpd (very secure ftp daemon) was developed to have an easy setup of a ftp server and have it secure right away. Windows 2000 FTP server ... okay just joking, that's not a option under Linux.

I use pure-ftpd and I think it is fantastic! It is the only linux ftp server I've used, but it seems to have support for everything and is fully customizable and VERY VERY secure. I can control everything via ssh including adding and configuring users, AND it allows virtual users so you don't have to create a new system user for every ftp client you want to add. The docs on their website are pretty good and tell all about the features. It has been very reliable for me. And there is a GUI control panel that someone made for KDE but I never tried it.
