Best distro for home router
 

hi,
my goal is:
i want to network three machines, to adsl internet connection
via usb modem connected to a linux router, and i'd also want to
run ftp server on router machine.

what distro shall i use?

(currently im using slackware on my desktop, but only for
sharing data with laptop on a small lan.)

theres no distrop that will necessarily ive you anything better without being a dedicated firewall like ipcop. if you like slack use slack.

it depends on what machine you have. RPM based systems might be too bloated for something like this. try slackware. it can run on a 486 (i have one running on slack).
or go for live distros that you can load entirely in memory.

If you want the most number of apps, drivers, tools, documentation, and easy install for a desktop systems go for SUSE10. If you want a reliable gateway go for Clarkconnect. Otherwise stick with the grand daddy of all distros Slackware.

i've did my job with slackware fine. i was just
wandernig if someone knows a distro
mainly for networking purpouses.
now my problem is sharing internet with
samba, but i guess i'll manage,
(its just a matter of reading howot's, isn't it?)

well ok,
but my my friend who's computer is connected to router
is running xp, so i thought that i'll have to use samba.
(i've used iptables, to connect my machines
runing on linux.)
i'm a newbie, so if it is not necassary to run samba,
for sharnig internet from linux router to windows desktop
plese inform me.

"Clark Connect" and Mitel's "SME Server" are 2 turnkey Internet/E-Mail Server/Gateway solutions.
I don't have much experience with Clark Connect but I have been using the SME Server for a
few of years and it is a good solution for a home or small business to use as an fully functional
Internet server. It has all of the parts needed (DHCP, NAT, Apache, Samba, Sandmail, Firewall, etc..)
You wll need to devote a seperate machine for it.
