Bellsouth dial-up and Kppp, not login prompt

I am trying to switch to BellSouth dial-up from another ISP. My old ISP is driving me a bit, well, nuts. It is a flakey thing at best. Anyway, it dials up the modem and it does the handshake and even connects at a slow but normal 26.4K connection. However according to wvdial BellSouth does not give me a login for some reason. This is what wvdial gives me:

Code:
root@smoker / # wvdial
WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvDial<*1>: Initializing modem.
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATZ
WvDial Modem<*1>: ATZ
WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
WvDial Modem<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
WvDial<*1>: Modem initialized.
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATDT*70,4952462
WvDial<*1>: Waiting for carrier.
WvDial Modem<*1>: ATDT*70,4952462
WvDial Modem<*1>: CONNECT 26400/V34/NONE
WvDial<*1>: Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
WvDial<Notice>: Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for
the best.
WvDial<Notice>: Starting pppd at Tue May 29 17:57:20 2007
WvDial<Notice>: Pid of pppd: 15088
WvDial<*1>: Using interface ppp0
WvDial<*1>: pppd: ([06][08][18][06][08]
WvDial<*1>: pppd: ([06][08][18][06][08]
WvDial<*1>: pppd: ([06][08][18][06][08]
WvDial<*1>: pppd: ([06][08][18][06][08]
WvDial<*1>: pppd: ([06][08][18][06][08]
WvDial<*1>: Disconnecting at Tue May 29 17:57:50 2007
As you may can see, it says it is waiting for the prompt but it never gets one. If I connect to my old ISP it gets a prompt.

This is what Kppp gives as a error:

Code:

Does anyone here use BellSouth and Kppp or wvdial? I need to figure out how to get this to work if someone has a idea.

Thanks

Did you put your username and password in /etc/wvdial.conf
something like
Code:
#

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyS1
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0
; Phone = 555-1212
; Username = my_login_name
; Password = my_login_password
I did get it to work one time a few years ago with bellsouth.net using wvdial but never did get kppp to work but I can't remember what I did.

Well, I posted this on the Gentoo lists as well. We been discussing this a bit and think we have found the problem. Bell South requires a v.90 or v.92 modem and I have a OLD V.34 modem. I think I need a new modem.

I do have that info in there though. It also works fine with my current ISP which doesn't require the newer modems. They are like me, they use what works. They also use Linux too.

I also tried pppconfig and pon to see what happens but no joy at all with it either.

I plan to order a new modem and will see what happens then. I hope it will work fine.

Thanks

You think this one will work with Bell South?

http://www.discountsales.com/shop/pu...1177517624.htm

I have had one of these before and I am pretty sure I used it a time or two with Bell South when my ISP was down. It seems to be the same spec wise. I do know it is not a winmodem. It worked well the last time with Linux until the storm came through and lightening hit it. No smoke, just didn't work anymore.

I hope to find a used one locally Monday though, I hope.

Your thoughts??
