Bandwidth problem while uploading

I am using RH7.2 and have cable internet which works just fine. I have recently installed a ftp server on my linux box and now if someone is downloading a big file from my machine then during that time my linux box can't make any further connection to/from internet. During this time I can neither use Web browser to browse any site nor I can check my e-mail. I tried to do PING from another pc via internet and it couldnt response too.

So I think while uploading any big file, my linux pc gets network congestion or port overlapping (port 21 ?) ? My question is if this is correct then how can i control my bandwidth ?

I guess I have to share my bandwidth somehow so that ftp server alone shall not eat up all my network bandwidth. Question is how to do it ?

Best regards,
Salman

It sounds to me like your main problem is that your network card is running at half duplex. I'm not sure how you change this or even how you check it in Linux... maybe if you post in the Networking forum with specs on your setup someone could answer that.

Another thing you might be able to do to correct this problem is look into an ftp server that allows you to regulate the amount of bandwidth for each ftpd process. I don't know if the same can be done with ipchains but that's a possibility as well.

Sorry that's not much help but it's all I could think of.

Well I am using rtl8139too driver (using modprobe rtl8139too) which I heard is an intelligent one and can support half/full duplex or 10/100Mbit as per status of link.

Anyway I have felt another problem with my Linux box which may be related, even sometimes when there is no ftp going on and there is no internet traffic, I still can’t get Timout in response to ping toward my Linux pc from other pc via internet. Then few seconds later it is ok. However I am also using this cable internet with MS-Windows and I don’t find such problems, so it can’t be Cable internet "fading" but seems to be problem with my Linux Ethernet configuration.

Please help !!!

I used to have a linksys card with the rtl8139 chip in it. It used to lock up randomly during large transfers. Mine went even more extreme by locking up totally which could only be resolved with resetting the network interface. I swapped it with a 3com nic and ever since it's been working without any problems. The same nic that was having problems works fine in a windows machine though.

Does your FTP server use the /etc/ftpaccess configuration file? If so, take a look at the "throughput" option in "man ftpaccess".
