Backing up Directories

I am currently using flexbackup to backup my Samba Directories.

Does anybody know of any other backup software to use?

I am backing up to a tape drive. I would like to be able to see what is on the tape and how large it is, plus be able to restore an individual file if needed. We are doing 1 full backup and incremental backups every day.

flexbackup has not been able to do everything i need.

I am running Linux Red Hat 8.0 and Samba 2.2.7

thanks for any help

You could always use the dump command although it seems by the man pages that dump only likes ext2 files systems:

man dump

I don't know but this is the preferred backup solution in my RedHat 8.0 book. I've never actually tried it though. You can get the dump command working right and then put it in a cron job.

dump allows you to extract individual files from a set. Using the -S flag will do a dry run and determine the size of the dump beforehand. There are also options for creating a TOC, but I think that will help with the searching rather than determining size.

I'm not sure how you would incorporate it into flexbackup I've used a method of creating a directory list of files changed in the last 5? days and dumping it into a file.. then use that file as the source to backup.

I could prolly give you some of the commands tomorrow if you like (need to copy/paste works backup scripts hehe).
