backgrounding eth0 during startup

When I installed Mandrake 10.1, the startup was quick because the search for the internet on eth0 apparently was done in the background.

But since I configured also a modem connection, the startup hangs on the eth0 line for a long time - especially when my internet is down which it often is (that's why I need the modem too...)

Is there a way of backgrounding this process during startup - without removing the modem connections settings? It would save time for me every time I turn on the computer.
