Question Automount!

*note that I have rephrased my question and posted it on the "General" forum instead... ...sorry bout that.

here it is: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=51500

Greetings!

A newbie to Linux, just installed Red Hat 8.0

Other than still being unable to hear sound, everything seems to be running smoothly... but I do have a question.

What I want is to Automount an SMB share. I have successfully mounted it by signing in as root and using:
mount -t smbfs //share /dir
(or something along those lines, anyway it worked)

The first problem is that I don't want to have to sign on as root.
After searching the forums, I have determined that I can probably mount it on boot in fstab.

The second problem is that the share is one that may or may not be available all the time. I am assuming that if the share is not available on the network at time of boot, then it won't be mounted and i'll have to restart when it's available (correct me if i'm wrong)

Searching for "Automount" on the forums gives me lots of results indicating how to mount on boot, but I was under the impressions that "Automount" means that it will mount on demand.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this going to find some info on it?

Thanks!
Carl
