Question automated network backup

what where when: 1 linux box & 5 workstations (linux redhat8 and win2k). the linux box will have a SCSI RAID setup. the workstations will have a 500mb partition each and the very small but very important files from each user will be saved to their 500mb partitions.

so what i want to do is have the linux box copy each 500mb partition onto the RAID drive at a set time every day. the software should automatically delete the oldest backup file when the RAID drive is full.

so does anyone know good software for doing this? or maybe even software that is under $1,000.00 and maybe also easy to learn and use?

is it possible to do this with a standard install of linux and samba?

There is a few ways to do this probably, but I think the fastest way to set it up is with an FTP server on the Linux box and the ncftpput command. You can get the ncftp client here for Windows:

http://www.ncftp.com/ncftp/

Its included with Linux. Just zip or tar up the files, and use cron on Linux and AT on Windows to schedule the jobs. You could even use cygwin on the windows boxes so that the scripts are all the same regardless of the platform.
