Authentication of Linux machines from windows 2000 domain controller


Is it possible to have Linux clients get authenticated by a windows 2000 domain controller.How is it made possible?

When I had a 2000 server running, I could browse the shares, but I was prompted for the my username and password. I believe I needed pam & heimdal among a couple others.
