I'm battling to get my Windows 2000 client's to authenticate on my Suse 9 server running samba 3.0.2a. I have gone through the documentation asked other user groups aswell as the samba mailing list. But i havn't had a response.
I have created an smbuser and changed the smbpasswd. But i keep getting the same error message that my password is incorrect. I have renamed my workgroup to something other than my domain as they were the same. I have also resarted my smb services.
Herewith my smb.conf file :
# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SuSE
# Date: 2003-09-23

When I enter the username and password to authenticate my win pc to the domain i recieve the following message - The following error occured attempting to join the domain "Omega" Logon failure. Unknown user name or bad password. -
My log file under /var/log/ displayes no error message. The DNS is setup correctly and the win pc is recieving the correct DHCP address.
My machine name is nic and i added the smb user as nic$ and created the password for it.
I just did it again and it only askes me to type the new password and then to confirm it. After this it just states that the password has been changed.
wait... you are using your machine name to login? why don't you try the easy method of using an actual login UID / password first?
Don't forget to check your smbusers, lmhosts, smbpasswd.
You can always create a UID without a PWD to log in to your smb shares from Winbox if security is not an issue. You can do that by using the passwd -d option for the UID.
I am only using the machine name in order to get the pc authenticated to the domain. I have created a actual userid and password but this also doesn't work.
Security is one of my highest concerns unfortunately.
