Applying samba patch

I would like to know how to apply samba patch when the samba machine is in production area of the company. The steps mentioned on the samba site asks to apply the patch in the soucrce code and then rebuild the samba package on the machine, will it be suitable if i do that or will the samba machine go down??

Just have the source whether the same version of samba you are running or newer version. Apply the patch and and compile the source. If it completes I would first bring the samba server down. Install the new samba. And then bring samba back up.
If the enviroment is system critical then I would first run on a test enviroment whether seperate machine or in a virtual enviroment.
