Apache/Tomcat Cluster

Okay, I know a couple of people have asked about this already but the responses were old and didnt quite work for what I was looking for. And since I've been told off before for re-opening old threads, here's my new one!

I currently have 3 servers running my websites. One Apache server, one Tomcat server and one SQL server. I'm thinking that traffic is going to really increase in the next year and I want to form a scalable architechture that will be redundant and faster.

What I initially came up with was to use mod_backhand on one Apache server and have it passing requests between 2 other Apache servers. The I would use mod_jk to pass dynamic content requests to 3 Tomcat servers which would in turn grab content from 3 more SQL servers clustered using Mosix (or something similar).

First, has anyone tried and successfully done something like this? Second, does this approach look reasonable? And third, and this is the big one, mod_backhand does not support Apache 2.0! >< Which means I'd have to downgrade to an older version of apach OR find a similar product that will do this.

So, have you dont it? Does this look right? What are my alternatives?

Thanks
