Apache/Samba file permissions/ownership

I have an apache server set up with it's root (/var/www/) being shared as a Samba share. this is in order to be able to upload to the server from within the LAN.

Originally the woner of all the files in the share were root/root rwxr--r--.

I changed this to webdev/apache rw-r--r--. So I can log in to the samba share as webdev and have apache use the group apache. does this make sence or is there a better way to do this.

All I want is to be able to upload to the sever from within the LAN.
