How soon will the new gaming box I buy become obsolete?

You seek the answers of a sage, LQ usually provides answers to questions that are a little more down to earth.

u want a gmail? PM me.

as for your question i would not know, how do you mean? my lil server runs a forum and a local site search no problem.

ewt3y 06-17-2005 07:11 AM

your lil server ? what is it ?

jollyjoice 06-17-2005 08:16 AM

its a 1.2 ghz athlon with scrounged HDDs and RAM. It runs a small forum and the forum is searchable. It also plubms through Folding@Home quite nicely.

It really depends on how many users you have coming to your site. Google runs a gigantic cluster of computers but they get more queries than you will I'm sure. My webserver is a whopping dual P3/500 and serves my little static site through my DSL with no problems while still having enough resources for the occasional local X session and of course to crunch seti@home.

Honestly, without specifics on how many users/hits/queries you will be serving against what size database and what esoteric content you will provide it would take a sage or palm reader to give you an answer like, "you need at least a 2 gig processor and 4 gigs of RAM to make this work" which sounds like the kind of answer you are seeking. Which is why I said you may as well have asked us about the chicken and the egg...

jollyjoice 06-20-2005 09:27 AM

chicken and egg, sorted mate; "chicken" doesn't lay eggs -> evolution happens -> starts laying eggs.

Same here Darin, i run ~ 3 small sites (and i mean small) and run KDE on it, (don't ask why, i just do ok?) with no problems. I think If I were to get more users on the site it would be the connection I would need to upgrade not the server.

To jollyjoice: what is your connection at the moment you post ? I guess ISP and IAP are the brokers. Is google connect to the Internet that way ?

people come in help please
