Apache 2.0.47 help

I am currently running apache 2 on my windows box and i wanted to install it on my redhat9 partition. I downloaded the newist veresion2.0.47 and went to install it. i wasn't sure witch modules to install so i ran these commands and installed all of them: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-mods-shared-all . then i ran make then makeinstall all under root. i then went to the httpd.conf and set it to listen on port 8081 and the site to mysite:8081. after that i configured my router to allow access to apache from port 8081. then i started it with the command cd usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start .
i then tried to acess the test page in my browser by going to mysite:8081 and i got an error ,essage saying that the webpage wasen't available. What did i do wrong?
please help me!

thanks

It sounds to me like the server is running from what you said. Do you have your web page in the directory that "DocumentRoot" in your config file is pointing to?

What is the exact wording of the error message?

Re: Apache 2.0.47 help

the error message that wasn't generated from the server. it was generated by IE and said: The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for might have been removed or had its name changed.
Basically saying that it couldn't find my server, right?

I don't know what the apache init script is called in redhat, but try typing either "service httpd restart" or "service apache restart". That will restart the service and give you a message letting you know if it is running or not.

Next, try and telnet into your server like this (replacing 80 with the port your server is listening on):
Quote:
$ telnet localhost 80
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
kdd
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<TITLE>501 Method Not Implemented</TITLE>
</HEAD><BODY>
<H1>Method Not Implemented</H1>
kdd to / not supported.<P>
Invalid method in request kdd<P>
<HR>
<ADDRESS>Apache/1.3.27 Server at 127.0.0.1 Port 80</ADDRESS>
</BODY></HTML>
Connection closed by foreign host.
If the server is listening on that port, it should look similar to the above after you type something and hit enter.

If the server isn't listening on that port (I picked a random number below), it will look like this:

Quote:
$ telnet localhost 98359
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
Hope that helps

You will probably be better off using the one you have built from source. That way you can be sure you are using the latest code, as new versions are released often.

Once you have it built and started, use "ps -ef | grep httpd" to verify that it is running, then test it from another machine.

Good luck!
