Anyone use an SMC 5004tx hub

I've got one I picked up second hand. I've got a lan setup using my Debian box as the server and a win95 box and a laptop logging into two pci nics in it. All is fine that way. But I wanted to try to use the SMC hub. When I plug the windows box into the hub the light shows connection, but nothing for the linux box on any port (one that says 'daisy chain' and 4 others) but the nic in back shows the light blinking non stop. Has anyone used this hub with success? Should I consider it a paperweight? Can't find much online info on it.
