anyone got samba working in FC4?

just "upgraded" to FC4. wouldn't recommend this if you're generally happy with your current installation. after my pleasant experience with FC3, i expected FC4 to be an improvement. but it's a pretty sloppy release. anyway...

i've been using samba for years, but its complexity increases faster than i can learn. so i'm stuck again.

my goal is very, very simple. i've got 2 machines running behind a netgear router, on a private subnet. one is running windows, the other FC4 Linux w/samba.

i can't connect to samba from linux or windows. the latest types of errors i'm getting (from various clients/logs) are like:
  • tdb(unnamed): tdb_open_ex: could not open file /var/cache/samba/unexpected.tdb: No such file or directory
  • '/home/'SHARE'' does not exist or is not a directory, when connecting to ['SHARE']
  • The file or folder smb://192.168.0.3/extra1 does not exist.

given my experience with Fedora releases, I'm assumming this is a bug in the samba version included with FC4.

has **anyone** gotten samba to work from an out of the box FC4 release? i'm talking no updates or unusual conf tweaks, etc...

got it partially figured out...

samba only seems to like to use stuff on my /dev/sda drive

i created a test share for /tmp/ and it works fine.

i created another share on the same partition with the same perms and all as my other shares, and it works fine too.

however, when i try to access shares on my /dev/hd* devices, i get the 'no directory' error

this is ultra annoying. i don't recall samba ever caring about what drives you were sharing in the past. only things i can think might mess it up is that i'm trying to share sd* and hd* devices at the same time? or perhaps that sda1 is the bootable partition? i don't know.

man, samba is always a major major challenge. arghhh.

Did you make sure the paths you want Samba to share are shareable in Linux? A directory or drive that belongs to root and has no rights other than root can't be seen thru Samba.

yes i've chowned and chmodded everything. tried all that. it boils down to the drives themselves. samba likes (ie will share) my one scsi drive but doesn't like any of my ide drives.
