Any LDAP users out there?
Hello everyone.
Well, I am looking for some LDAP feedback. Basically, I have installed LDAP on my RH 8.0 server to do some testing. As I am diving into LDAP more, I am coming across just out deep LDAP can go. There are a lot of things that I did not know about LDAP that will take quite some time to get acquainted with.
But, I do have a quick question. Now that I have LDAP configured, what is the process for setting up clients? Obviously, I need to configure the server, but exactly how does one set up the server for client usage?
I know this sounds complete newbie like, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to setup a few test users on LDAP.
If anyone can throw some hints my way, I would very much appreciate it.
Thank you.
T.

I am experimenting with OpenLDAP now too.
I have set up an address book for my office. Users can access contact info. such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, etc. straight from Outlook Express or Eudora. I suspect other packages can be used as well, but I have only tried it with these two.
We have one big list of contacts. This info. is not confidential so we have not set any authentication requirements. The only restriction is that users can read but not update the database.
Some basic info. re: setting access controls is available in the OpenLDAP 2.1 Administrator's Guide. http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin/
Go to the section on Access Control.
What do you want to do with LDAP? I have read about using it for Samba authentication, mail routing, directory services...

jamrock, thanks for your reply.
In response to your question, we are trying to setup a new user management system in the company I work for. Right now, we are running a couple of Samba servers and Win2K workstations.
We want to implement LDAP so our users can access not only samba shares, but also information about employees or anything else we want to set up.
I have a lot to learn and a lot to read.
I will go over that link you gave me as well. Looks like there may be a lot of good info in there.
Thanks again.

Ok...grrr, LDAP.
Can someone just tell me if it is possible, to setup LDAP to have it authenticate users on the LDAP server? I am trying to get this up and running and it's really starting to go crazy now.
Can someone let me know if that is possible? I know once I have a test up and running, I can work out the rest.
Thanks. Looking forward to help!
