I have an ACtiontec DSL modem... It is plugged into a router...and another computer is also plugged into the router. I am using the host computer. Anyway, my main problem is...many ports won't work. For instance I can't send files on aMSN...but can recieve. I can't connect to various other programs that use tcp ports. I mentioned this to someone...and they told me I need to "forward ports". I've tried doing this by going to 192.168.0.1 in my browser and using the port forwarding page...but have had no luck. I don't really know what I'm doing though..because I don't really understand it. Anyway, I'd REALLY like to be able to send files over amsn...and also have certain ports work. I also, have installed no firewall. I am using Slackware 10 with the 2.6.6 kernel...if that helps at all.
Hope someone can help me with this...have tried several times with no luck!
I guess you want acces from your windoze since you mentioned MSN.
Browse to the router setup page. (The ip address of the router. You find it in the manual)
Go to virtual servers. Here you can enable which hosts (windoze or linuz box or both) and ports you want opened for MSN. Perhaps somebody else here on the forum know which, if any, ports that need to be open.
I did as someone said...and made a static IP on my linux box. I put in 192.168.1.20 for the local ip...then I put the correct nameserver and gateway provided by my isp. It works...but ... port forwarding still doesn't work. Do I add a port to be forwarded on both the DSL modem and Router setup? Or just one? If so which one? And for the IP for the port to be forwarded too...do I put 192.168.1.20?
for what I understand of your problem you need to forward the prot(s) from the router to your box(linux,winhoze,etc..). On my cisco router it looks like this.
set nat entry add 10.0.0.2(linux box) 22(port) xxx.x.x.x(router ip. i.e. the outside ip) 22(port)

I've tried that with no luck =\

I installed windows on a small partition, and it turns out I can send over MSN on windows fine. It's a linux problem of some sort. Any idea what...or explain why?
