Almost there! Internet on RedHat9 via XP
Shared Internet Service:
I'm trying to share my internet connection from WinXP to my linux Redhat9 laptop. I have configured my network cards and each machine can ping each other via name or ip. I'm not sure what else I need to do. I have windows XP that connects to the net via dial, details: workgroup: freedom machine name: beastie machine ip: 192.168.0.1 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 default gateway: NONE set I have a RedHat9 laptop that connects to this via a crossover cable: workgroup: freedom machine name: ganymede machine ip: 192.168.0.2 (eth0) subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 default gateway: NONE set lo local loopback is fine (127.0.0.1) I'm all ready to share it. What extra steps should I do to finish setting it up? I think I "enable sharing" from the windows side? ie, there is nothing else I need to change on the linux side unless I need to set the linux box's default gateway via redhat-config-network ? When I ping a web address I get: network is unreachable. Thanks for reading this! :) Ps. I have seen another posting like this but I got lost in the exchanges. I thought I might to post this separately to reduce the clutter. ;) |
set the linux box ethernet to dhcp and share the connection on XP. that should do it. you dont have to set the gateway in linux. it should be able to do it on its own.
you might want to think about putting the linux box in the front and share the connection from it. ;) |
Ok manthram I'll give that a go. You really mean that dhcp can work between Xp and Linux. :) And XP can handle that. Double Wow!
Thanks again manthram. I nearly have most of my Redhat stuff fulling working now. |
dhcp... you said it! ;)
Worked a charm! Thanks a mil! |

Under network connections on XP, right click on your internet connectio (dialup connection or what ever) and go to properties. Under advanced there is a checkbox that says something along the lines of: "Allow others to share the internet through this connection" Check that, then set your linux machine's gateway to the XP's ip..and thats it.

cheers
Thanks hornet,
I have it working but you just reminded me of one XP habit I hate! I have a linux laptop connected to the XP box with the internet connection... when I connect the lap to the network. XP then decides to dial up to connect to the net. I want to share the net when I go online but I DON'T want XP to dial up for automatically for me though. Grr! Anyone come across this one? |
hrm.. I never had that problem.
I do know there is a setting under the dialup properties about "redial when line dropped" is that the culprit? I now have aDSL, with my linux as the gateway :) |
