Newbie to Linux!

Using Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB with Benoit Papillault's OS drivers.
(modem_run, pppoa2, pppoa3)

I am meant to have a 512Kbps dl speed - mozilla downloads clock in at about 56Kbps - hmmm. (still a huge improvement over my modem). Is it just that the effective speed of any internet connection is always a lot less than the touted speed (has anyone ever actually got over 256Kbps??).

Now I set all of the options needed for firing up the modem etc, but noticed the following lines in my confirmation from my service provider:

Encapsulation method: VCMUX
Modulation method: G.DMT

Do I need to set these options? How so?

Also, how do you set the MTU for RedHat?

Just a question were you ment to have 512 Kps or 512 kps?

Speed (kbps) Translated to: Speed (KBps)
128 = 16
256 = 32
384 = 48
768 = 96
1000 = 125
1500 = 187.5
2000 = 250
3000 = 375
7100 = 887.5

MTU setting (not only for redhat) :

$ ifconfig [interface] mtu [size]

see man ifconfig for futher details

Cheers, sussed the MTU thing myself - you can also pop it into the pppd config file.
