ADSL RedHat 9 Internet connection
 

I am new to Linux O/S. After succesfull installation of RedHat9, I tried to connect to the internet but nothing's happening. The system does not even detect the ADSL modem, contrary to Redhat documentation found on redhat site
I am using BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL modem connected straight to USB port but not to eth0.
I configured eth0 with a static IP address, netmask and boadcast addresses.
After running the command internet-druid under root and trying to initialise eth0, I get the following error
determining IP information for eth0 ---> failed.
Has anyone had similar experience or can anyone help.

you have the modem hooked up directly to the computer? do you HAVE a NIC?

if your trying to get the settings of the eth0 and dont have one it wont be there.. im kinda confused about the setup sorry

do you see the modem in the output of the 'lsusb' command? do you need a driver for it?

The ADSL modem is hooked to the USB port. The NIC card is not connected to anything. According to Redhat documentation the NIC card has got to be setup before trying to make the ADSL modem work.
I don't see the modem displayed when running lsusb command as root.
May I need I need a Kernel module for my ADL modem.

i dont understand how you could connect without using the NIC? :confused:

i say just use a network cable to connect from the nic to the modem, it should also have RJ45 jack to connect to.. and just dont use the usb for anything. (just power to the wall and conenction to the NIC)

in lspci do you see your NIC card information?

for the modem if you want to see the info, maybe you need to download the driver

If you read the original post, it was stated that it was a USB modem.

I looked up the website for your modem. The only downloads are for PC and MAC.

I had a modem once that had USB and RJ-45 connections. Depending on which one you used, a different driver was needed.

Have you tried any other USB peripherals to make sure the USB ports are working?

i did read the original post.. i didnt know you could just use a modem and bypass the network interface.

Oh Dear the Bt Voyager.... very hard to get working under any distro of Linux ( if you can get it working at all)

Any way i have sarched the forum for you and come accross a link where a guy managed to get it working, there is quite an extensive detailed pdf document you should print out and read:study: I would be prepared to do a lot of fiddling with settings.:scratch:

I found this site that lists your modem as supported under linux. There is some documentation you will have to read through. It seems fairly easy to understand though.

There is a list on the left side. If you click Modems, your modem is listed along with 58 other supported modems. I would start by clicked Beginners Tutorial, which is right above Modems
