ADSL modem for fedora7
 

Hi,

I have upgraded the server OS from FC2 to FC7.
I need to buy a new ADSL modem for the office LAN. The MODEM provide by my ISP is not supported or not found in HCL of Fedoda 7.
Will anyone suggest a ADSL modem supported by FC7.
More details;
OS:Fedora core7.
need: ADSL Modem(USB).

Much better to buy an ethernet based modem for Linux. usb stuff has always been poorly supported and is a poor performer. Ethernet works with all Linux distros and is generally very easy to configure and troubleshoot manually.

True. USB ADSL (and probably other network stuff too) just causes trouble. A regular ethernet card, a few cables (or wireless if you like) and an external ADSL modem (RJ45) is what works - no need to worry after getting one of those. And since they don't cost much, it's all the same. Actually I thought USB ones cost more?

but my ISP has provided a RJ11 line which am connecting to an external USB ADSL modem. My management told to just replace the MODEM, not the line or internet plan.

Do you mean i need to connect my eth0 to an external ADSL modem whose other end is connected to ISP line?

You should buy a modem/router with 1 to 4 ethernet ports. They usually also have a usb port as well. Connect the supplied RJ11 cable (normally supplied with the modem router) to the adsl filter in the phone jack and then connect your system to the modem/router via an ethernet cable. Most of these units can be configured via an http connection. The only thing you need to ensure is that you can connect via dhcp or the ip address of the card in the box is in the same subnet as the modem/router. This detail is normally stated in the handbook.

As you stated , i bought a ADSL MODEM of having RJ11 on one end , USB and RJ45 connector on the side to server(not 4/has only one.. not a pbm). Now I connected the telephone cable to RJ11 and the RJ45 is connected to the server.
The server has no graphic tool to configure the MODEM. Do you know in FC7 where to start with the setup of modem?
or i can start with "adsl-setup" ? please advice.

Further i have a big doubt of , whether the MODEM will be detected or not as i am connecting through the Ethernet cable to the server.

The delay in reply is due to the holidays.

Get yourself a copy Knoppix. Connect a laptop or pc to the modem and boot it using the Knoppix cd. You should be able to connect to the modem/router using dhcp (via network setup of the main menu - I cannot remember the exact item off the main menu) and Mozilla on the desktop. Once you have setup the modem/router for connection to your isp. Connect the server to the modem router and set the ethernet card on the same subnet as the router. Use the modem/router ip address as the gateway for the server. It is better to use static addressing in this situation if you intend to use the server as a server or a nat server.
Examples of what I am talking about; If the modem/router has an ip address like 192.168.1.1 then use an address like 192.168.1.2 for the ethernet card conected to it. The gateway for the server will be 192.168.1.1.
