Angry ADSL + DHCP == Timeout == Worst days of my life

Hi everyone..

ADSL Modem
USR 9000 Sureconnect (usb adsl modem)

Operating System
Gentoo Linux 1.4

Problem

My ISP uses DHCP for ADSL. That means I have to use some kind of dhcp client to get my IP. Previously I owned an ITeX PCI ADSL card. ITeX provided us with closed source binary kernel modules for a while, but they stopped that since after Kernel 2.4.8. So I switched to USR 9000 recently. To get an IP before I used either one of the following:

1) pump -i eth0 (pump is a dhcp client)
2) dhcpcd eth0 (dhcpcd is also a dhcp client - I guess)

And within no seconds I used to get my IP and all was set and ready to go.

But it isn't like that any more . I'm facing troubles now. I setup everything as per the instructions on the USR website (sorry I can't post any links because I am a new member). I have all the correct USB modules. I never had to use any kind of ATM stuff from the kernel earlier when I had the ITeX adsl card. So I assume I won't need it now either. After I set everything up, my modem appears as "ADIModem" interface if I do "ifconfig -a". The final step left is to do "dhcpcd ADIModem". It takes a while, and then TIMESOUT . That is the message I get from "dmesg" or "tail -f /var/log/messages". I can't figure out what is wrong at all. I have tried to search the internet for this problem and no one seems to have come accross it, or maybe I'm just a lousy no good google searcher

Really any help is appreciated.
Thank you

Just wanted to bring back the post on top so that someone could reply .. please. I would really appreciate anything that can help me.

Why does DHCP Timeout getting an IP .. I have no firewalls, no proxies blocking, no routers, just a plain old ADSL USB modem trying to get an IP via DHCP.

Thanks

my .02 is that dhcpcd gets bitchy about connecting if the default gateway is not set properly (this is the only time i've ever gotten timeouts). if there is some default gateway you need to enter for internet access, this could fix your problems. in that case you'd do (i think this would work on your cmd line)

route add default gw <default gateway IP>

and then try to connect again.

this is just a hunch, as i am only used to slackware.

Well it doesn't matter what distro I try.. LOL I switched from slackware to gentoo/debian/redhatty to just try .. seems like my modem is just fux0red.

Well I thaught dhcpcd would set the default gateway and stuff for you automatically. It gets everything up for ya.. just as it does on a network. But I do have a default gateway, which I'll set and try to see if DHCP works. If it works.. you're my HERO man

Thanks for a nice reply. I appreciate it yocompia
