Maybe you should take a look at sshfs

Thanks for that. I just set up sshfs and it seems OK. But would I need to mount and umount the remote drive each time I get back to the house. WHat happens if I leave the network drive mounted and leave the house? Is there any chance of data corruption? If yes, would there be any way of automating the process of mounting the drive when I am back home and unmounting it when I leave?

You might need to explain in better detail what you are trying to accomplish.

Basically what I want to do is set up big files to download while I leave the house. That means I need to point the downloads to the network drive. If I mount the drive, that means my laptop cannot leave the network.
