Activating second NIC makes server lower

Hello!

I have a HP ProLiant server with 2 NICs.

The os is SuSe Linux Enterprise Server 8.

The Nic` s are:

01:03.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 08)
Subsystem: Compaq Computer Corporation Compaq NC3163 Fast Ethernet NIC
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 11
Memory at d0300000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
I/O ports at b400 [size=64]
Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled] [size=1M]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

01:04.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 08)
Subsystem: Compaq Computer Corporation Compaq NC3163 Fast Ethernet NIC
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 11
Memory at d0400000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
I/O ports at b440 [size=64]
Memory at d0100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled] [size=1M]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

There are some services working on the server like dhcp - samba - tftp and so on.

The problem is:

When I deaktivate the second NIC ifconfig eth1 down, the server reacts faster. The throwput is the same, but i can reach the server faster (by dhcp f.e.).

Why is that ?

Thanks!

don't know but maybe deactivate one NIC = less program running = less CPU usage?

Thanks for your answer, but no, services and CPU usage stay the same!
