Activating network interface at bootup

I am an almost total Linux so please be patient.

Durring my install of RH9 I as asked which of my two LAN cards I would like activated at boot time. Like an idiot I ASSUMED that eth0 was the netgear card I wanted to use and eht1 was the internal one that I didn't want to use. So I told it to not bother bringing eth1 up at boot.

I was wrong, I actually want it the other way around. I have been through the network config applets in X and when I bring eth1 up it dosent activate at the next boot. My Linux unleased book suggests a change to the kernal oprtions at boot may solve my problem, but the only instructions it has are for lilo, while I am on GRUB.

Can any of you guys help?

Cheers,

Open up a text editor and open the file /etc/network/interfaces

In the file should be the lines

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Replace eth0 with eth1 and save.

same in ifstate replace eth0 with eth1.

LEt me know what happens (Theirs probably network guys around ready to shot me for this!)

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I take it that if I want both interfaces up then I just copy the line for eth0 and paste it into that same file renaming it to eth1

e.g.

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
