Access Remote computer behind a router
 

Hi everybody

Any good tips on accessing a computer from the Internet that's connected to a router AND with a DYNAMIC IP address.

If I remember to check the IP address each time then I can connect usually via SSH (Port 22) and if that's blocked Port 443 (HTTPS) invariably works --I'm not running an HTTPS server but this port is invariably left open 99% of the time when you are on the internet.

If the remote computer accidently gets re-booted or the IP address changes I'm stuck.

Can I get somehow a DNS server where I can just access the computer via a domain name. Not sure how to set this up --would be greatful if someon could post links on how to get this done.

In the UK a lot of ISP's give you Dynamic IP addresses which makes things a bit more complicated.

since you have remote access , why not use dyndns on that remote or is there
a restriction for you to do this ?

You can get a free domain from dyndns.org or no-ip.com. Both of these also offer a free program that periodically checks if the IP has changed and updates the domain to point to the current IP address.

If the remote computer is yours, I'd advise you to close port 443 if you're not running a secure web server. What do you mean when you say "this port is invariably left open"? On every router I've used it's been closed by default.
