a problem with continuous dropping of my internet connection

I have a linksys wrt54g with a belkin wifi card and recently (last three months) my internet connection keeps dropping off quite frequently. so much so that it's making even browsing difficult. I use ubuntu 8.04 but the problems not restricted to just that as it happens in xp too where i have to click repair internet connection every half hour. It seems to have started when i upgraded to 8.04 and happens much more frequently in that than in xp to the point where i hardly use ubuntu anymore which is bad because i can't stand xp. I can't think of a reason why ubuntu could be interfering with xp and I'm assuming that it's just a coincidence. It doesn't seem to happen to any of the other computers on the network, there are about five on it and someone suggested that my router may be struggling with too many connections only it happens in the day when all the others are turned off. On occasion xp will be fine for a few hours till someone else comes home and switches there computer on and then I'm binned off and have to ask for a new ip address, the leases are set to 24 hours and i had the same ip number for years until recently, now i receive a new ip each time and it'll not give me the recorded lease back. I'm not really sure what could be causing this and although my router's about four years old it's never moved and shouldn't be damaged in any way. Any suggestions?
Cheers brynn

I understand you are operating with a wi-fi connection right ?
Did you check that the channel you are using is not interfering with another nearby access-point ?
Just shut you router down, and try to see if there is no other connection available.
