I have installed just about every linux dist out there and the networking works on all of them except for RH9 right out of install. For some reason RH9 comes up with the error: "no link present...check bad cable?" This doesn't make any sense because all other distributions(SuSE, Mandrake, Debian, Slackware) I have tried work fine. I have the 3C905C-TX Compatible network card. Redhat hardware information shows that my adapter has been detected. Any ideas?
hi Cody, you've tried that exact nic with all those other distributions? I'm just curious because I also have a 3com 3c905 and I have been having probs configuring my card with RH7. I was wondering if maybe it's a bio prob because I have a compaq. do you know anything about that? Or can you maybe tell me how to get that nic to work with RH7?
Thanks
Yeah, I have used the same computer, same configuration for every other distribution. I can't seem to figure out the problem with Redhat though. I haven't tried RH7 yet, but I will try that and see what happens. It is just weird that all other distributions have worked just fine with little to no post install configuration, but RH9 says I have a bad cable? Strange...
Just install it and with every other distribution it has worked. Not on RH9 though, I haven't had to ever do any kind of extra configuration just to get it to work.
Alright, well, I finally got it working. I had to download the other driver that works for the 3c920 card 3c90x.o from 3Com's website. Compile it and install it. Now my networking works well except I had to explicitly define my DNS server names. In other words, my DHCP server isn't giving or my RH9 box isn't receiving the DNS name servers.
