3Com 3C509B = eth0 AND eth1: How is that possible?
I have installed Slack 9.1 on a 486DX2-40 which has a sound card, modem, and 3 Com 3C509B NIC. All cards are ISA. The NIC is recognized by the system but can not ping any other IPs on the network except its own. Here is a portion of the DMESG pertaining to the NIC:
isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards... isapnp: Card '3Com 3C509B EtherLink III' isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total eth0: 3c5x9 at 0x220, 10baseT port, address 00 00 af 00 6c 00, IRQ 5. 3c509.c:1.19 16Oct2002 becker@scyld.com http://www.scyld.com/network/3c509.html eth1: 3c5x9 at 0x300, 10baseT port, address 00 20 af 69 6c ab, IRQ 10. 3c509.c:1.19 16Oct2002 becker@scyld.com http://www.scyld.com/network/3c509.html scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices eth0: Setting 3c5x9/3c5x9B half-duplex mode if_port: 0, sw_info: 8400 eth0: Setting Rx mode to 1 addresses. Why do I have a listing for both eth0 and eth1? Any ideas on how to get the NIC working properly? Thanks! |
you seem to have two 3C509B cards ( MAC Addresses 00 00 af 00 6c 00 and 00 20 af 69 6c ab) in your computer OR the driver mis-detects some other card as a 3C509B
try removing al unnecessary cards and reboot |
I have the same card with the same problem it has two MAC address and there is only one card I looked 3 times because I thought I was losing my mind I don't know how it can have 2 MAC address. I am using slackware 9.0. I also can ping nothing. It works fine under windows. I beginning to wonder if I have a driver problem. I don't know.

I think I may have the problem solved there seems to be problems with the IRQ and PNP issues all fixable these links should help. Seems we need to download some 3com disks and reconfigure the cards.
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/too...9/3c5096.1.htm http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/?page...etails&hid=215 this one is real helpful. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ghlight=3c509b http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ghlight=3c509b I am downloading the disk now hope this works!! |
Shuting off PNP fixed it working properly now.
|
I also shut off the PNP and it works! The "dual" Ethernet devices didn't show up in other posts so I thought I had a unique problem unrelated to PNP. It is strange that Linux does recognize the PNP card but doesn't know what to do with it.
Does your card run Full Duplex or Half? When I boot up, I see a message that it is setting the card to Half-Duplex. Have any idea why that is? |
I haven't looked at that yet been a full weekend. If I remember correctly there was something about that at the linux driver web page. If you scroll up to your first post there is a link to that page in your post of the dmesg.
I would still like to know how it got two mac address from one card! |
I looked again at the website but didn't see what you referred to. Maybe you ran across it on a different page.

Yeah my card is running in half duplex to found the palce
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/too...9/3c5096.1.htm Full duplex support for the 3C509B has been added to the NetWare server and Windows NT/95/98 drivers. Control of the full duplex feature is provided in the configuration and diagnostic program. Full duplex operation improves overall network throughput on twisted pair (TP) networks. If you loaded the 3com NIC Diagnostic in windows I think the setting may be called I/O Sychronous Ready Capability on configuratoin tab. haven't tried it yet I am getting to sleepy to mess with this any mope today. Good Luck!! |
