* in place of ASN in traceroute


hi,
i am using traceroute command for checking internet path stability. i ran a tracroute and it gave something like the following:

in 7th hop,[*] is shown rather than ASN. can anybody tell what does it mean?

AS stands for "Autonomous System". See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_System_Number, http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/ripe-525 and the XML list or ASNs at http://www.iana.org/assignments/as-numbers/.
