'eth0 does not seem to be present" : RHEL 5 suddenly fails to recognize eth0

Hello,
I've been facing a weird problem lately. one of my lan machines - RHEL server 5- which was doing fine til yesterday-being able to ping, connect and internet- suddenly does not recognize any ethernet card, after one shutdown. no ping is possible. i checked my network - configurn files; everything seems properly configured. whenever i try
# service network restart
the following error comes up:
Bringing up interface eth0: e100 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. [FAILED]

i tried ifup eth0, but the same message again appears.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
thanks.

Hi linaru, Welcome to lq. Have you checked to see if the modules are loaded?
Good luck. ;-)

Thanks Peacedog! Regarding the command to check the modules, which one was it? I'm still not familiar with all the networking commands.

Hi Linaru,

Can you please paste the output of the following command

cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Cheers

May have found a workaround here. After some reading/googling it appears to be a bug. I'd check the Redhat/Fedora bugzillas to see if it's been resolved. Until then the above post in the Fedora forums seems to be working for some.
Good luck. ;-)
