Angry wifi access point setup on android?

I have good wifi at home, and can't get my Android (HTC Hero on CM-4.2.15 or so) to use it. Can anyone sort me out with the story here? I have in
Wireless Controls --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names
a wifi point as follows:

Name wifi
[ loads not set]
MCC 272
MNC 03
APN Type Default

It is selected, but I am not connected. When I ping the router ( I get a reply that is not available :-O? Only is online atm, although there's a m$vista box out there somewhere :-/.
