Using Sony Ericsson W508a as a modem

Hi everybody,

I have internet access via 3g on my phone and I'd like to use it (SE W508) as a modem on my linux box; I've managed to make the phone work as a modem in Windows using its related software, but I don't know how to do it in linux (I'm using Kubuntu 9.10).

Anyone have any idea? Any tip/suggestion/etc would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Toshiro.

I use my SE K800i and my Satio as a modem by bluetooth. It's very easy to install. Just install Bluez and wicd or network-manager-gnome (not both) and add them as a panel option. Then click on the blue B and search for your phone (should be detectable) and add your phone to your devices list. Now you can use the network manager for connecting with your phone by clicking it in the list wich pops up from the system bar, and the connection is made.

Well, I don't have bluetooth in my computer, so I need to make the connection via the USB cable.

These are solutions for other models of SE, but most respond in the same way.

Perhaps this link will help. It's quite complicated if you're new to Linux and/or how to set up a modem connection with terminal commands.

Here's an other one

Most descriptions are as follows: Connecting the phone, selecting 'phone mode' and connect with a terminal or a program to auto-connect. I'll try to make a connection with my own phone, since I got one from the same model range.

*edit: first attempt has failed. I'll be back shortly (have to go now for few days).

Can't help you with Kubuntu but I can tell you the W508a works fine in Fedora12 using the Network Manager. You need to supply the APN, dial in number, user name and password, ask your ISP if you don't know what these are.

Cool Why can my data card only be used in 2G networks

Step 1: Choose Tools > Options to open the Options interface.

Step 2: Set Network Type to WCDMA only and click Apply. About one minute later, you can access 3G networks.

Step 3: If you still cannot access 3G networks after 3G only is selected, the APN may be incorrectly set. Contact the local carrier.

If the problem persists when the APN is correctly set and 3G only is selected, use a 3G mobile phone to test whether the local area is covered by 3G networks. If the 3G mobile phone cannot access 3G networks, you can infer that the problem must be related to the network.
