Problem with HTC Flyer

I picked up a flyer for my sister and did the upgrade to honeycomb [3.2.1]. it has been working fine for almost a week now, but all of a sudden it won't ask me what application to use for anything. if i click an mp3 file or a pdf or anything from any app, the screen darkens a little bit, but it never asks what app to use to open it, which means i would have to open the desired app, and try to point it to that file.

I am wondering if i am the only one to have this problem (after looking through google for an hour it seems that way), and if anyone knows of a way i might solve this problem. it is very annoying and difficult to deal with. i have never had this happen on my android phone or any of my friend's android devices. might a factory reset fix the problem? or rooting the device? i would prefer not to do either of those things, as this is not actually my tablet, but if it would help i would consider it.

Maybe the wrong app is set up as the default for mp3 files.

Try looking through the app list for something which is set to open mp3 files.

Nope. i double-checked every app i have capable of playing an mp3 file, and nothing. it still won't let me choose what app to run a file in.
