Some packages may be able to be used with Maemo.

Last time I looked at it though, a package wanted to remove my maemo core and install a different dependency (forgot what it was exactly), so I did not continue.

Also, while Maemo is based on Debian it doesn't mean its .deb files are compatible, in a similar way that you should not install debian .deb packages on Ubuntu and vice versa.

If you look through maemo.org, there is a package called "Easy Debian". It will take quiet long and download a lot of data but in return you have complete Debian-Arm environment where you can apt-get almost everything.
The stock maemo also uses .deb packages but its repositories are limited to maemo.org and any custom ones the developers set up themselves. You can experiment with adding debian repositories directly but I would advice against that. Do it ONLY if you are feeling adventurous because you will most probably break things.
