Current CM Updates on HTC (Spanish "Rogers" type) Dream

I have a rooted htc dream with CM-4.2.15.1. It comes up with a Telefonica Movistar splash screen. Now google maps is gone west, (nagged me to update and then screwed it up 'not correctly signed' when I let it.

Rooting involved putting some dude's hack in as the bootloader distributed as 'givemeroot.zip') which allows me to hold the home button while booting and I can install any zip, and then installing
1. Some HTC system thing linked somewhere at the time - the htc bit.
2.Cyanogen's Mod.

I had thought of going to the latest CM instead, but I am finding a plethora of warnings about different versions and issues like that. Has anyone been reading even some of the gigabytes that android software developers write, or miles of forum threads? I wonder how those guys have never found it handy to date stuff, so I'd know what's current or what's from 2002. I also wonder how they find time to write code!

I'd love someone to say 'never mind that stuff: do a,b,& c'

Oh well :-(.

I have google maps back and I have bigger fish to fry. I guess anyone who is up to date on that stuff is in a home for the bewildered :-/. I would be if I tried.
