Cannot get the sound to work on a new install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS PPS

Hi all from Amsterdam

I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS PPC to my aging 15" Mac PowerBook, (build April 2004) as a last ditch solution to its redundancy. I tried Lubuntu 13.04 ppc as the preferred installation and very quickly came to the decision that it was so riddled with bugs that as an average user, it wasn't worth pursuing. So I ditched that as a waste of time and effort. I've managed to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS PPS and strangely, it appears to be working a lot better and faster than it's Lubuntu sibling. However, there is no sound. Alsamixer is just not there. I've used the terminal to check and it tells me no file or directory.

This is what I have tried so far as dirrected by the Ubuntu Wiki help. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#W...ve_no_sound.3F.

Checking for alsamixer in terminal:

andyinmokum@andyinmokum-laptop:~$ sudo alsamixer
[sudo] password for andyinmokum:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
andyinmokum@andyinmokum-laptop:~$

Checking lsmod:

andyinmokum@andyinmokum-laptop:~$ lsmod

This leaves the inherited Debian bug. So this Blacklist was created

GNU nano 2.2.6 File: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf

# Local module settings
# Created by the Debian installer

blacklist snd-aoa-codec-tas
blacklist snd-aoa-fabric-layout
blacklist snd-aoa-i2sbus

Saved using ctrl+o. Exited and rebooted Ubuntu. Still no sound or alsamixer. Tested with Rhythmbox, sound setting output indicated dummy output. Im really new to Linux and Iv run out of ideas. Other than the sound, the old Mac is running like a top. My main computer is Fujitsu Siemens Li 3710 laptop with Linux Mint Debian Edition. So easy to install and configure. A real joy to use. Ubuntu 12.04 ppc is a different story. I hope enough info has be provided. Any help would be really appreciated.

Futher info:

I have downloaded and installed through the synaptic package manager alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer. The alsamixer now shows up and can be activated and appears to be working everything is unmuted. Still the output is showing, "play sound through Dummy output". I hope this helps.

May be it is directed to an inexistent or unused output.
Check the sound board address...?

Greetings from Amsterdam.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have solved the problem. It was a bug in the Debian kernel. I had to blacklist some items to bypass the problem, It is running beautifully now. Lots of sound. I will post the solution tommorow. It could be very useful for other people.

Thanks again and have a great weekend.
